Hey Vishal, I'm glad you got through the IIT. Change comes from admitting that things are broken, and then fixing them. If you cannot even admit that IITs have problems, you are in for a rude shock when you meet people from other good Universities.

dekho yaar...only 2 percent of students appeared for jee are able to make it to iits.98 percents students are left with jealousy for these iitians.i am not saying that all 98 percent students are useless ,some of them are good ,but they are not iitians.non iitians ko jo bhi bakwas karani hai karo,iits are the best engineering colleges of india in terms of students,placements,studies.

i read the last comment and it was the clincher for me.if the industy guys think iitian b tech students are useless,then how does it matter if they clear the toughest questions.they are just bookworms,it would seem.please do not fire upon me,i am not related to this profession :-)

Around 30% of my recent team consititued of IITians. After first freaking out that an ordinary engineer like me has to lead so many geniuses, I braced myself for the job. However, I found only one guy reasonably good. The rest are... well... I became curious and got hold of a IIT JEE sample question paper (for the first time). Coaching institutes or not, I am convinced that one needs a lot of intelligence and perseverence to ace these tests. I too salute all those who clear this test (like the other blogger above). However, something went horribly wrong somewhere and these guys turned out to be sub-standard. What is it? Are the seniors in industry like me expecting too much from them? Do they tend to rest on their academic laurels and do not try hard in industry? Are they only motivated by highly challenging work that really whacks their brains out? Aren't they motivated by routine jobs like design and production? Anyway, I will not be prejudiced when I encounter an IITian next time. I will think that he/she is probably good. Then, I shall make due diligence and judge them before jumping to conclusions that they are capable. Because I don't need geniuses who cleared IIT JEE test. I need those who can handle the job I give them.

I am really really concerned about what went wrong. Our country cannot afford to waste the genius of the most intelligent of our kids.

IIT entrance can be cracked by cramming.By cramming I don't mean the process of learning by heart the way we learn the English alphabets. By cramming I mean the lack of the questioning attitude. You test students by asking questions on the subject . But are they ever judged by the pertinent questions they can ask about the subject. You learn the formula E=MC^2 and do you ever think what on earth that means?

With the effort you put into clearing these exams, you can find a position in a North American university ten times better than IIT .

I am doing PhD in Chemistry. , which provides the top living chemists ranked based on there contributions. I found that in a very long list of about five hundred chemists (http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/news/2007/april/23040701.asp) you would find only two Indians, but not any where in the top. A few more Indians names appear but none of them are educated in India.

And here is a list of the most sought after research supervisors , http://careerchem.com/RECRUITMENT-CHEMISTRY/Advisors.pdf .You wont fight an Indian in the list. So do you think someone should take the trouble of getting into IIT or IISc to do research when you can find a place abroad at much less effort. He/She can put that effort into something bigger than getting into IIT.

oh man!!!!! u r IITK and IIMA alumnus. u got time to comment and tht too in very bad way (unprofessional). 5-10 marks makes huge difference in JEE. and talent of one is decided by mere one entrance (JEE).. and today most students r frm coaching factories.. u say about 10, 7 pointers of iit,nit.. tht is where improvement is needed in indian education. there must be NOT VERY MUCH diff. between IIT and NITs and other college.

Bull shit they were just not good enough and they cry...they'll cry till eternity... and regarding quality...these so call talented NITians 10 pointers go to IIMs just on the hype of their colleges and there even IIT 7 pointers beat the shit outta them...I knw I am an IITK and IIMA alumnus..

You cannot expect an Indian Institute to provide world class facilites like a big and spacious hostel room to each and every student.40% of our population is below poverty line
and you are a post graduate from IIT , you hardly realise how much the entrance exam develops the mind of the student.

At the day of JEE, one student missed sit by 5-10 marks. Now welcome u r non-iitian as if they are loser, there self pride is at stake. ok, who got through JEE desrve to be happy but what about who missed it due to some reason. About thousand student miss it by these small marks, due to health reason, or luck.... It hurts most of the time to the students in this category. AND they can't even cope up with these bad thoughts and ruin there studies in other coll.. What we need is about 100 of IIT or brand like them. See news channel, magazines, news papers, govt. even doesn't think much abt nxt in line NITs, IIIT's.

Common i feel very bad about student just nxt to them. AND plz. govt. give us world class institute other than IIT. So that talent of one can be decided by other exams and institute at world level.

I'm happy that I chose RVCE Bangalore over the IITs. We had cows grazing there too and some professors were frustrating, but others were gems. I had a great bunch of friends, developed a real interest in subjects because of my visits to the science and defence labs in Bangalore and as a result enjoyed my studies in mechanical engineering. Subsequently I have been employed with two leading Indian companies for around six years now and plan to do a PhD next year. And I think my RV education actually helped me - better than having your natural curiosity and interest in engineering destroyed by egomaniacal professors.

I have had to work with IITians throughout my career - and only once was I impressed with the person - it was a 1973 passout. But he too seemed too wishy washy and whimsical to do actual great work in industry.

In all, I agree that the IITs are a huge scam, and that the alumni are highly over rated. The really talented ones don't study in college and do great stuff once they pass out. The studious ones get burnt out, and the good enough ones get good enough government jobs.

MIT and Caltech are much more older than IITs and certainly they are leaders in research.IITs inspite of many hardships are doing well even though not very well.And about your list...you conveniently skipped out people from IITs.On what basis did u choose these people(Anil Ambani,Ratan Tata..they aren't self made billionaires).Also,IITians probably could be more successful in software industry or so on rather than manufacturing sector of whom your list comprises.

hi all,
i am doing my mtech in electrical dept of iitd and these are some of my observations...
1. i am very happy with the quality of teaching ...although the facilities available have been a touch disappointing.
2. i've seen some very good btech students and some really ordinary ones as well. and this is true for mtech students as well(atleast in elec dept). so if ppl say that btechs in iit are superior to mtech-----it might not really be true or possibly true only for that batch....and i also believe the quality of mtech students has steadily increased.
3. as far as mtech students not participating in any events....i can say that i have found mtech to be very demanding and leaves hardly any time for extra activities........but this might not be true for other depts
4. during the time i have spent in campus i have noticed that students(mtech and btech, both in equal measure) lack general courtesy...by this i mean , students don't bother using the trash cans, they do not flush the toilet(!!!!) and they waste food offered in mess each and everyday!....if students in an educational institute behave like this, then is it a surprise that our cities are so full of garbage?

I'm glad people outside IITs really started questioning capabilities of IITs.As an insider I want other insiders to think over these issues.
1.How many of us really study for the sake of itself i.e, out of passion.All the time we think of CPI/GPA and we do really ignore the real reason for what we are studying.We dont think beyond CPI.
We measure our friends on basis of their performance in exams. Exams,especially the way they are here are in a pretty bad shape.They kill enthu and creativity.Its like IITs take good people and kill their enthu,passion(not in all cases).Hope atleast some of you agree with me on this point.
2.We think of jobs and placements right from 1st year of our IIT episode.We do a projects or participate in a cult fest hoping that these would be worthy writing in a resume.We dont try to find out what we really like to do.Are we not enough confident about ourself?I feel its like selliing myself in a market and constantly striving for making my price better and better.Isn't it like that.May be our society and parents have brain washed us for 20 years like this and its hard for us to come out of this but how many of us atleast think of this that there's something wrong somewhere.Do we atleast dare to think of a start up.Its not that markets saturated,we dont dare.We want to on safe side,we opt or jobs,or IIMs just 30 years of polishing and our brains become numb.Our country at present needs such people...confident,efficient,courageous,risk takers
3.Thats right.IITs educational system along with indian are dumb.They stress more on exams,books et cetera that kill free thinking,openness.When will the hard heads at the top of the system understand this?Why arent they open to new rooms of ideas.Without new ideas,reforms,India will not do better.

Well I am in IIT Delhi presently doing B. Tech, completed 3rd year. If whatever you have written is true, either IIT-D is much much better than IIT-B, or things have just changed a LOT in the last 4 years. The profs are really good, at least most of them....and the handwriting thing you have written is just non-existent. All profs look for content only, and marking is very fair, the only bad thing being the weird criteria for allotting final grades, but I wouldn't go into that.

There are Dogs in the campus and there are a few pics in circulation in the net where dogs can be seen to be attending lectures more attentively than students rofl. Washing machines and Geysers are not a problem at all, and the Comp services center has a good number of fast working comps, although you cant be sure of the internet speed. Library still has got no general reading stuff except some old Hindi novels.

Though the original thread is 4 year old, all the thoughts are applicable still today. About the cows in campus, this is how I looked at it.

When I was in Brisbane, one foreigner asked me "Is it true that you have cows on the road in India"? I said "Yes, we do have, the same way you have women in bikinis on road. But that we do not have in India".
